Beningbrough Hall, North Yorkshire

Summary
Marquetry panel showing the Bourchier knot and the inset initials 'R.B.' White painted carved frame.
Full description
The initials may stand for Ralph Bourchier (1531-1598) the first of the family to inherit and occupy the Beningbrough estate. If contemporary with Ralph, this is presumably a surviving fragment from Beningbrough Grange, the Bourchier's house that preceeded the current hall. See NT 1190832 for a very similar inlaid panel.
Provenance
Research has shown that this panel was previously set into a carved wooden surround at the head of the main staircase within Beningbrough Hall, where it had been since at least the early 20th century. It was replaced during refurbishment of the hall in 1979 by a very similar example originally found hanging by the secondary staircase (see NT 1190832).
