Summary
Riding Coat, c1900. Dark blue wool with raised nap. hand and machine sewn with top stitching. Stand-up collar faced with velvet, sleeve gathered into armhole and curved to cuff. Coat flares to hem, double breasted at the front with 2 pockets and a slit for a swort hilt. Back vent opening and lined throughout in contrasting scarlet worsted. Fastened with 22 brass buttons decorated with crossed sword and telescope (British General Officer's Button 1855 - 1912) and 2 brass badges at the collar in the form of grenades (possibly tied to Sir Percy Herbert's role as deputy quartermaster-general at the Horse Guards 1860-65) fastened by a chain at the collar. By tradition it is thought, that the coat was worn by Sir Percy Herbert KCB (1822-1876) but the tailoring details indicate a later date.
