Full description
Wooden gun case for a flintlock sporting gun, c1805, the interior of the lid with the trade label of John Manton, London. The case was almost certainly supplied by Manton for the flintlock sporting gun at Powis (1181085) when he relocked the gun in about 1805. John Manton (fl. 1781-1834), No. 6 Dover Street, London, was gunmaker to George IV. The style of trade label was used between c1801 – c1815. Mahogony box with a hinged lid, secured by 2 brass catches and lock. The exterior of the lid has an inset escutcheon and folding handle, the escutcheon engraved with a Coronet and the initial C (Clive). The interior of the case is lined with green baize, with compartments for the gun and the various equipment required for loading and cleaning. One compartment has a wooden lid with a bone lifter. The interior of the lid has a trade label inscribed beneath a Royal crest; John Manton, Gunmaker to their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duke of York, No. 6 Dover Street.
