Summary
A 19th century, East Indian gaming set, comprisong of a reversible chess/backgammon board a wooden carcass with ivory, sandalwood and blackwood veneers, the ivory decorated with neo-classical garlands filled with black lacquer. The backgammon board with the monogram 'E.C.' in a central medallion on the centre of each half. Ensuite are three matching ivory-veneered, sandalwood lined boxes (2-4), containing a set of conventional European chessman, the black pieces of horn (5-20), and the white pieces of ivory (21-36); a pair of turned sandalwood dice cups with ivory trim (37/38); backgammon counters of turned ivory and sandalwood (39-70).
