Summary
Weather vane. The weather vane consists of a reinforced iron vane in the form of a griffin (the crest of the Clive family) mounted on a wrought iron shaft. It is likely that the vane was originally gilded. Below the vane are the four compass points as letters. The points are made of wrought iron and fixed to wrought iron rods. They are secured to the central rod via a large nut as the base of the shaft is threaded. The weather vane has a decorative base with a series of repeating scrollwork elements riveted to a central square shaft. This part is painted black. The weather vane sits on a small lead sheet covered wooden base. The central shaft passes through this base into the top of the bell tower roof where it is secured to the underneath with a large nut. Four later steel straps had been riveted to the underside of each bottom scroll and then secured to the top of the lead covered wooden base with modern screws to provide some stability to the weather vane. A copper alloy lighting conductor was fitted around the bottom of the central shaft.
Provenance
Part of the original bequest of the property in 1952.
