Summary
One of two Footman's livery coats, 1898. Dark blue wool, raised nap. Hand and machine sewn, stand-up collar curved sleeves to cuff, cut away bodice to tails, false pocket flaps, tail pockets. Fastened at the front with 1 hook and eye mid breast covered with a silver braid trimmed tab that buttons to the coat. Trimmed with with gilt /silver gilt thread braid and gilt /silver gilt russian braid round neck; down front; down sleeve length; on cuffs; and tails. Epaulet cord in gilt/silver gilt plaited cords interlaced with metal ends attached to proper left shoulder. Egdes of collar, front opening pockets, cuffs, back vent and front tab in scarlett piping. Body lined and quilted with scarlett worsted (twill weave), sleeves with beige cotton (twill weave), and pocket flaps black cotton (twill weave). 14 metal buttons (silver/silver plate), manufactured by Firmin and Sons Ltd, bear Powis Coat of Arms; 2 on tab, 3 on each cuff, 3 on each pocket. Livery made for the 4th Earl who inherited in 1891.
Provenance
Jacket belonged to Footman Wright in 1989 before passing to Footman Sutton. Purchased by the National Trust from the John George Herbert, 8th Earl of Powis and Powis Estate Trustees in March 2001.
