Summary
An oak and cane day bed, English, circa 1880.17th century style, with an adjustable hinged back carved to the top rail with putti holding a crown and with further floral carving centred by a caned panel, the seat caned and with conforming carved detail, twist turned baluster supports tied by further carved stretchers and twist turned stretchers.
Full description
Recorded in 1944 Inventory as ‘A carved Stuart Day bed cane panels and loose squab en suite with curtains and loose square cushion en suite and a square cushion in floral brocade bound cord' in Oak Drawing Room. The 'Pears' pattern fabric was designed by G. F. Bodley in 1874 for Watts & Co. to use as a wallpaper, the design taken from a flock paper dated c1735, formally at Hampton Court (Country Life Oct. 21 1993. p.82.).
Provenance
Part of the indigenous collection of Powis Castle accepted in part satisfaction of the Estate duty after the death of the Right Honourable George Charles, 4th Earl of Powis, on 9th November 1952. The contract of the 'Offer of Property in Satisfaction of Estate Duty under the National Land Fund Scheme' was completed on 21st March 1963. Conveyed to National Trust ownership in 1992.
