Summary
Game - Reversible chess / backgammon board; wooden carcass with ivory, sandalwood and horn veneers, the ivory decorated with a fret or key pattern filled with black lacquer. The backgammon board with the letter 'P' under an Earl's coronet. Silver mounts. En suite with 1187417.1-3. E.India (Vizagapatam), c.1800. See 'Treasures from India' catalogue pg.84 / no.107.
Provenance
Collected by Edward Clive (1754-1839). Recorded in 1944 Inventory as ‘A 19in Indian ivory backgammon board 3 inner boxes containing chessmen draughtsmen 2 dice throwers 1 box lid fitted as cribbage marker' in Tapestry Drawing Room (Blue Drawing Room). Purchased by the National Trust with funding from The National Heritage Memorial Fund from John George Herbert, 8th Earl of Powis and Powis Estate Trustees in August 1999.
