Summary
Scabbard to Sir Percy Herbert's dress sword, the sword by C.F.Hancock, Bruton Street, London, the steel blade with an inscription that records the presentation to Sir Percy Herbert by Ludlow Corporation, 22 August 1856, names of battles in India and the Crimea. The scabbard of brass covered in black leather with elaborate strapwork decorated in bronze at mid point, top and base, incorporating the Ludlow Arms (top), the Powis Arms (middle) and trophies (base).
Provenance
Sword presented to Sir Percy Herbert (1822-76) by Ludlow Corporation. Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax and conveyed to National Trust ownership on 29th November 1963.
