Summary
Sir Percy Herbert's dress sword, the sword by C.F.Hancock, Bruton Street, London, the steel blade with an inscription that records the presentation to Sir Percy Herbert by Ludlow Corporation, 22 August 1856, names of battles in India and the Crimea; initials P.E.H and the Powis Crest, elaborate tooling on face and reverse, the pistol grip hilt of carved ivory set with two rubies each side, the cross guard of bronze with raised strapwork decorated with oval ruby each side and with two emeralds and four diamonds on the face side; having a tassel of gilt thread.
Provenance
Sword presented to Sir Percy Herbert (1822-76) by Ludlow Corporation. Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax and conveyed to National Trust ownership on 29th November 1963.
