Summary
A Carlton House mahogany writing desk, English, second half 19th century, the superstructure with rectangular top surmounted by a pierced three-quarter brass gallery, above nine small drawers, six with knob handles and three with keyholes, flanked by two curved slopes with lower raised lips, each above a drawer with brass knob handle, the central gilt-tooled leather-inset writing surface which can slide forward with two brass knob handles, above two frieze oak-lined drawers with brass knob handles, with moulded brass overlay to rounded corners, on four turned and tapering legs with brass caps and castors.
Provenance
Property of Mr. H. S. Goodhart-Rendel (1887-1959) who gave Hatchlands Park to the National Trust in 1945. Following Mr. Goodhart-Rendel's death items were Accepted in Lieu and transferred by the Treasury to the National Trust in 1962.
