Caption

In its heyday when this carriage was complete, it would have been a very fine mode of transport. Sadly it is now just a shadow of its former self.

Summary

Carriage part. Undercarriage from a family coach or chariot, built circa 1833-1847. Undercarriage (four wheels) for a pair or team of horses. This undercarriage consists of a perch and undersprings, the ‘C’ springs are missing. A coachman’s seat is above the platform boot. To the rear of the undercarriage is a hind boot with a rumble seat bolted to the hind footboard on deep scroll carved blocks. Painted in a livery of black with red lining. The 'Rossett' coach. A large under-carriage from a family coach or chariot, c.1833-1847. 'Collinge Patent' engraved on the axle caps lines.

Full description

This has been called both the Rossett Coach (which it almost certainly isn’t) and the Family Coach (which the undercarriage may well come from). It is an old perch undercarriage probably dating from the beginning of the nineteenth. There is some nice heavy carved work in the fore-carriage and beds. The box seat and rumble seat are both mounted on trunk boots attached directly to the beds, so the coachman and servants would get no advantage from the now missing ‘C’ springs. In its heyday when it was still complete this would have been a fine coach.

Provenance

Given by Philip Yorke III (1905-1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973.
