Pickering Floats were most commonly used for delivering milk as the floor of the vehicle is fairly low to the ground enabling customers to hold their pails under the tap of the churn. This particular example was more likely to have been used for transporting livestock to market as it has been adapted with high slatted sides.
Summary
Market Float built in the early part of the twentieth century by Lamble & Co of Liverpool. Market Float (two wheels) for a single horse. The body is built in the 'pickering style', sprung on side springs with slatted sides and a front panel with a curved top edge. The sides have basketwork for decoration. Over the wheels are curved splash guards. There is an applied metal plaque with ‘Phillip Yorke Esqre Erddig Pk Wrexham’ painted on it. The body is varnished and the axle, springs, wheels and shafts are painted yellow with black lining.
Full description
This varnished Pickering style float is extremely nice. It is a very stylish general purpose country two-wheeler. The axle caps are engraved Lamble and Co, Liverpool which is interesting because Pickering – who gave their name to this style of float were also in Liverpool. It is all original except the new soft-wood floor and the rubber tyres and clincher channels which presumably replace iron tyres. Pickering Floats were most commonly used for delivering milk as the floor of the vehicle is fairly low to the ground enabling customers to hold their pails under the tap of the churn. This particular example was more likely to have been used for transporting livestock to market as it has been adapted with high slatted sides.
Provenance
Given by Philip Yorke III (1905-1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973.
