The game of chess has been around for over 1500 years, and there are several sets in the Erddig collection. This particular set was a gift to Simon Yorke III from his wife Victoria, and no doubt found its way over the years into the hands of the last young squires of Erddig, Simon IV and Philip III.

Given by Phillip Yorke III (1905-1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973.
