Summary
Statuette. A Parian ware statuette of the apostle called 'Simon Zelotes' or 'Simon the Zealot'. It is impressed at front of the plinth with '3330/A 16' under the base. One tradition says he visited Britain, possibly Glastonbury, and was martyred in Caistor, Lincolnshire. According to legend he was put to death by a saw, hence the saw in his hand.
Provenance
Given by Philip Yorke III (1905-1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973.
