The last squires of Erddig wrote in their childhood diaries about playing with miniature soldiers, this may even be the set they were referring to.
Summary
Military drill exercise set. A wooden box containing 'Miniature Drill or In- Door Practice for Volunteers, consisting of moveable figures which can be put through the Infantry Field Exercises devised by Sergeant B.Clayton of the Twenty-eighth Middlesex (London Irish) Rifles'. The printed paper figures are attached to wooden stands. There are thirteen different types of figures, with sixty eight figures in total. A label attached to the box gives instructions, and is dated 1861.

Given by Phillip Yorke III (1905-1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973.
