German military percussion pistol dated 1861, by Valentin Christoph Schilling, Suhl, Thuringen, Germany, (fl.1849 – 1900). 2 stage iron barrel, octagonal to round, the breech stamped with the date 1861 and serial No.115. Breech with removable screw in nipple chamber. Blade fore-sight and raised rear sight on barrel tang. Retained to the stock by 1 muzzle band which also forms the fore-end cap. No provision for a ramrod. Barrel length 28.7cm. Calibre 14.5mm. Plain walnut full stock, the left side stamped with serial No 115. Steel furniture comprising; buttcap with landyard ring, trigger guard with finger rest and ribbon side-plate. Plain percussion lock of flat form stamped SUHL and V.C.S. Pivoting nipple protector with “frizzen-style” spring. Retained to the stock by 2 sidenails. Overall length: 46.5cm
