Summary
A turtleshell and brass marquetry toilet mirror, or dressing glass, French, circa 1870. The shaped silvered mirror plate in an arched surround, centred by a mask-cast medallion, and with urn-shaped finials to the uprights. The supports ebonised and scrolling, and with ormolu foliate mounts and medallions. Fitted with a pair of articulated candle brackets, with foliate-cast candle cups. On a serpentine-fronted and stepped ebonised base, on four bun feet.
Provenance
Listed in the State Bedroom as a 'Buhl Dressing Glass' in an inventory taken at Erddig in 1895, and as a 'Buhl Toilet Mirror' in an inventory taken there in 1922. Given by Philip Yorke III (1905-1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973.
