Summary
A carved oak hall bench, English or Welsh, late 19th century. The rectangular seat with leaf-carved moulded edge, and fitted with a shaped and arched back carved with a satyr mask between foliated scrolls, the sides scroll-pierced and downswept. The friezes carved with interlaced oval strapwork carved with flowerheads. Raised to the front on a pair of pillar legs carved with stylised foliate and with stylised paw feet. The rear legs plain and rectangular-section. -- This hall bench is part of a small group of heavily carved dark oak furniture at Erddig - all of which is carved in a distinctive pseudo-17th century style, but which occasionally incorporates earlier timber - of the late 19th century believed to be associated with General John Yorke (1814 - 1890), son of Simon Yorke II (1771 - 1834) of Erddig, of Plas Newydd, Llangollen, a house full of carved oak furniture and objects.

Given by Phillip Yorke III (1905-1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973.
