Summary
A carved oak reredos, English or Welsh, probably constructed in the mid- to late 19th century from a variety of earlier elements. The main element a carved oak overmantel or headboard section, dated 1663, of two panels, once inlaid and framed by arcades within rails and muntins carved with meandering foliage. The two outer flanking panels carved with martial figures and floral roundels or rosettes. These two panels not original to the central section, but probably 18th century in date. Topped by a late 17th century Baroque cresting rail centred by an angel with raised wings between a pair of foliated scrolls, each centred by a sunflower-type flower. The base rail or shelf 17th century, and carved with lunettes, scrolls and lozenges.
Provenance
According to Louisa Yorke, Facts and Fancies (p. 27), this was purchased circa 1909 at 'Mr. Edisbury's sale, Wrexham', but it had originally been at Bersham Hall and then Valle Crucis. Bersham Hall was first built in 1698, after the date carved on the central section. Given by Philip Yorke III (1905-1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973.
