Summary
A carved oak prayer desk, or lectern, English or Welsh, mid-19th century. The sloping top carved with the words 'Spare Thy People O Lord' and with an applied moulded book rest. Above a panel pierced with tracery bifoils, trefoils and quatrefoils. The end supports moulded and shaped. Adjusting on a lacquered brass mechanism.
Provenance
Reputedly purchased in 1895 (16 - 20 September) from Leasowe Castle, Cheshire (Louisa Yorke, Facts and Fancies). Given by Philip Yorke III (1905-1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973.
