Summary
A mahogany sideboard, English, circa 1810, probably by Gillows of Lancaster. Of inverted breakfront form, and with rounded front corners. Fitted with a long central drawer above curving spandrels, and between two flanking deeper cellaret drawers, with tin liners. The drawers all with applied beading with concave corners. The bottom edge of the sideboard with an applied triple reed. Raised to the front on a pair of reeded and turned and tapering legs, with engaged upper columns. The rear legs conforming. The drawers fitted with brass knob handles; the carcase of softwood and oak. -- This sideboard is apparently unstamped or signed, but it is similar to designs in the Gillows Estimate Sketch book, particularly in the full-length reeded columns which descend to form the front legs. The Dining Room at Erddig is also furnished with a set of twenty-two chairs by Gillow & Co., supplied in 1827 [NT 1147044].
