Summary
A goncalo alves Sutherland table, English, circa 1840 - 60, possibly by Gillow & Co. of Oxford Street, London, or by Howard & Son, of Berners St., Soho. With a slender fixed top and two hinged drop-leaves with rounded corners. All veneered in well-figured goncalo alves. Raised at each end on a pair of slender, ring-turned columns resting on a small platform with curved ends, and on two hipped downswept rectangular-section legs with brass caps and castors. Joined by a conforming slender stretcher turned with rings and a pair of opposing balusters. With two swiveling gate-legs to support the flaps when raised. -- Of very good quality, veneered in fine timber and with high quality brass caps - with chamfered angles - to the feet. Similar tables in goncalo alves are known to have been made by Gillow. Indeed, Gillow & Co. were probably one of the first firms to make Sutherland tables, and examples were illustrated in the 1840 Estimate Sketch Book, a relatively early date for this sort of table.
