Summary
Silhouette of Frances Bankes, Lady Brownlow (1756 – 1847). An oval silhouette of a woman. On the reverse a newspaper cutting dated 1849, inscribed 'Frances LD Brownlow -- taken before her marriage'. Frances Bankes, Lady Brownlow was the daughter of Sir Henry Bankes (1711-1774) an alderman and merchant of London and Frances Pembrooke; married in 1775 as his second wife, Sir Brownlow Cust, 1st Baron Brownlow of Belton (1744-1807) and brought with her a dowry of £100,000, and a collection of her father's pictures. She also bore him eleven children
Provenance
Given by Phillip Yorke III (1905-1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973.
