Summary
Watercolour on paper, A watercolour entitled Girl standing on her Hands in the Garden at Erddig, Clwyd by Robert Bates (b. 1943), signed and dated: R C Bates July 1987. " A peaceful, sunny afternoon", writes the artist, "People stroll quietly in the grounds. A young girl stands, spontaneously on her hands and that sudden movement of limbs and colours contrast with the stillness and serenity...". The Trust's reconstruction of the overgrown garden took place in the mid-1970s. Its features were known from Thomas Badesdale's bird's-eye view of 1739 and a list of 1718 recorded the fruit trees that were growing there.
