Grey and black wash on paper, Judge George Jeffreys, 1st Baron Jeffreys of Wem (1648-1689) (after Sir Godfrey Kneller) by Joseph Allen (Birmingham 1769 - Erdington 1839). The original by Kneller at Erddig. One of a set of thirteen. Original at Erddig (Kneller). 'Royal Tribes' facing pg.108. Part of a group of thirteen historical portraits, twelve were engraved by William Bond as plates published in 'The Royal Tribes of Wales' by Philip Yorke I, 1798. The 'Shakespeare' drawing does not belong to this series. See F and F page 9. Twelve pressed gilt metal frames.
Provenance
Given by Philip Yorke III (1905-1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973. Nos 43-54 in St John Gore's cat. of Erddig pictures.
