Summary
Pencil drawing on laid on paper, An unknown man, called William Shakespeare (1564-1616) by Elizabeth Ratcliffe (Chester c.1735 - Liverpool c.1810)- Giltwood frame. Part of a group of thirteen historical portraits, twelve were engraved by William Bond as plates published in 'The Royal Tribes of Wales' by Philip Yorke I, 1798. The 'Shakespeare' drawing does not belong to this series. See F and F page nine. Twelve pressed gilt metal frames.
Provenance
Nos 43-54 in St John Gore's cat. of Erddig pictures. Given by Phillip Yorke III (1905-1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973.
