Caption
Simple yet effective, this contraption must have been the kitchen staff's saviour during hot summer days when flies were a nuisance. Filled with a sticky liquid, flies and wasps would have been attracted up into the jar from beneath, finding that the only place to land was in the sticky mixture, trapping them. In days when preserving food on hot days without a fridge was hard enough, keeping the flies contained was one measure to keep ingredients fresh.
Summary

Provenance
Given by Philip Yorke III (1905-1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973
