Summary
Stone plinth for a statue of Mary Queen of Scots (1129361.1) by Sir Richard Westmacott RA (London 1775 - London 1856) A plinth on which stands a statue of Maltese stone of Mary, Queen of Scots, modelled on a portrait at Chatsworth (said to be by Zuccaro) and her tomb in Westminster Abbey. The shield on the plinth is copied from a carving at Holyrood. Commissioned from Richard Westmacott, the Elder. The pedestal is formed of three sections: Plinth: this lowest section is 560mm high, a plain square base with an ogee moulding above. Die block: 1050mm high 762 x 762mm on plan, the front three faces are decorated with geometric raised border panels, the two outer sides identical, the front face has the same geometry however this is embellished with a cushioned crown in relief, projecting from the surface of the die block. Below the crown are two recessed ferrous sections, the upper a coat of arms, the lower a blank rectangular plaque. The rear face of the pedestal is plain. Capstone: this is 145mm high 860 x 860mm on plan, simply moulded with a lower astragal bead moulding atop which is ogee moulding.
