Summary
Watercolour on paper, An Unknown Woman in Mourning Dress, by William Biscombe Gardner (1849-1919), 1883. The sitter wears her hair in a central parting tied back with a black band, with a grey top fringed around the collar with lace, on a graduated black to grey background, signed and dated by the artist to the bottom right. In a cream oval mount within a carved wood frame with a gilt painted border, glazed.
Provenance
Owned by Ernö Goldfinger and Ursula Ruth Blackwell, also known as Mrs Ernö Goldfinger. Purchased by the National Trust in 1994.
