Summary
An ice chest, or ice box, English, circa 1910, by Johnson & Ravey of 4 Conduit Street, London. With a grained finish, and with a hinged and insulated lid, opening to reveal a zinc-lined interior with upper edge lining of red felt. With grooves to the interior for shelves. A vent to the front. Raised on ovoid feet. -- Johnson & Ravey were a firm of braziers specialising in cookware. They were absorbed by Benham & Froud in 1919.
Provenance
By descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959.
