Summary
A bergère chair, one of a pair of mahogany and cane bergère chairs, English, circa 1835, in the manner of Gillows of Lancaster, and with original leather-covered squab seat cushion and back cushion, and canework back and sides. The frame with scroll-over top rail and straight arms on in-curved moulded arm supports descending to ring-turned and tapering reeded front legs, each headed by a floral paterae and fitted with brass caps and castors.
Provenance
By descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959.
