Summary
A pine needlework frame, English, first half of the 20th century, bearing a red velvet needlework with appliquéd gold and silver cloth and gilt metal threads in a design of cartouches amidst flowers, the central cartouche bearing the initials 'ED' and a Ducal crown, for Evelyn, Duchess of Devonshire (1870 - 1960), whose needlework this is. The stand with hinged area adjusting both horizontally and vertically, the stretcher adjusting the width.
Provenance
By descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959.
