Summary
A carved hardwood ten-fold screen, decorated with red lacquer and applied with hardstones and ivory, Chinese, circa 1900. The front composed of panels in a variety of sizes, the bottom panel of each fold a hardwood panel carved with a dragon and clouds. The remaining panels applied with hardstones and ivory depicting Oriental scenes, motifs, objects and flora. The back similarly decorated, each fold of ten or eleven lacquer panels, but with a plain hardwood panel at the bottom of each fold. Some areas incised and painted.
Provenance
By descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959.
