Summary
A fire screen, one of a pair of carved oak fire screens, English, late 19th century, this one framing a piece of 17th century green cut velvet, very worn and with repairs, under glass. The screen carved to each side with a run of diminishing scrolls, the end supports with foliate spandrels and diverging into two outswept supports.
Provenance
By descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959.
