Summary
A fire screen, one of a pair of carved oak fire screens, English, late 19th century, this one framing a piece of 16th century metal thread embroidery on red velvet, probably a cushion cover, stitched to the centre with the Hardwick arms with stag supporters, amidst scattered floral and foliate slips, the border stitched with Bess of Hardwick's initials, 'E' and 'S', under glass. The screen carved to each side with a run of diminishing scrolls, the end supports with foliate spandrels and diverging into two outswept supports.

Transferred to the National Trust from the Treasury in 1984.
