Summary
A mahogany stool, English, in George III style, with chamfered square-section supports united by an 'H'-shaped stretcher, and upholstered (like 1127716.1 - 6) with which it is en suite in mid-19th century blue damask matching the bed hangings, which were re-made in 1852 by the 6th Duke of Devonshire to replace the (then tattered) 17th century hangings from the bed of Christian Bruce, wife of the 2nd Earl of Devonshire, to whom the bed in the Blue Room once belonged. The embroidery to this set of chairs is the original 17th century embroidery which embellished the original bed hangings.
Provenance
By descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959.
