Summary
A beech and cane invalid chair, English, circa 1900, by John Carter of 6A New Cavendish Street, London. The square back with central cane panel, and with cane seat between downswept scroll-ended arms extending at the back to form handles. With cane seat, raised on turned legs and with a lower set of handles. -- The paper label to this chair torn and only partial. However, another chair in the collection at Felbrigg (NT 1398927) of identical design bears a paper label for John Carter. John Carter was active as a maker and designer of invalid carriages & wheelchairs. He traded from 6a New Cavendish Street, Portland Place, London, England about from circa 1880-1920.
Provenance
By descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959.
