Summary
A mahogany box commode, English, late 19th/early 20th century. Plumbed in. With a hinged lifting lid and brass carry handles to either end. Raised on compressed bun feet. Lined to the interior with sheet metal. And fitted to the inside with a pierced hinged seat, a blue and white-printed ceramic pan decorated with classical and Oriental buildings in a landscape of willows, and a brass flush, in the form of a hand clasping a rod.
Provenance
By descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959.
