Summary
A painted oak and pine washstand, English, circa 1850. The top with three-quarter gallery fitted with a small shelf above a rectangular top, both the shelf and the top later covered in oil cloth, raised on four ring- and baluster-turned supports united by a concave-fronted shelf stretcher with raised edge. All-over painted in brown to simulate wood-grain.
Provenance
By descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959.
