This silver-plated candelabra, with its baroque-style moulding, seems somewhat out of place amidst the sleek, utilitarian designs of Goldfinger’s modernist home. A family heirloom passed down the generations, it is a tangible reminder of Goldfinger’s old world Hungarian roots, but it also anticipates contemporary interior decorating practice in mixing the old with the new.
Summary
A pair of silver plated baroque 6 branch candlesticks, probably from Hungaria. Each moulded with a central holder surrounded by a further five holders mounted on arms moulded with scrolling foliage. Issuing from a flared base also profusely moulded with scrolling foliage and cabochons. Infilled to the underside with lead, and bearing hallmarks to the plate.
Provenance
Owned by Ernö Goldfinger and Ursula Ruth Blackwell, also known as Mrs Ernö Goldfinger. Purchased by the National Trust in 1994.
