Jardinière, hard-paste porcelain, round, tapering towards the base and with a pronounced rim, painted in underglaze blue with a continuous scene of figures in combat and with a hexagonal pattern below the rim, probably made in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province, China, 18th or 19th century.
Full description
This vessel was made as a relatively inexpensive export product. The decoration on the exterior was inspired by the woodblock-printed illustrations to popular Chinese novels. It was probably intended to be used as a small jardinière, i.e. to hold a flowering plant or shrub.
Provenance
Accepted by HM Government in lieu of inheritance tax and allocated to the National Trust, 1958.
