Summary
Collage and pencil on paper cardboard, Facilité (Facility) or Loplop présente (Lolop Introduces) by Max Ernst, (Brühl 1891 – Paris 1976), 1931, signed bottom right. A collage comprised of pencil drawn and multimedia collaged elements. 'Loplop', the artist's bird-like alter-ego, is depicted in pencil on the paper substrate, taking the form of a disembodied head and tail within a network of geometric lines and again, more elaborately, within the anatomical print pasted just off centre. The plate is taken from the Anatomie Des Formes Extérieures Du Corps Humain A L'Usage Des Peintres Et Des Sculpteurs Par Le Docteur J. Fau. Atlas Composé de 24 Planches Dessinées D'Après Nature, et lithographiées par M. Léveillé, élève de M. Jacob. published by Julien Fau (1849). The plate depicts a nude woman standing in contrapposto, her proper left hand resting upon a plinth upon which a nude child stands, also in contrapposto, and with its proper right arm raised. The child's skeleton is depicted directly below, within an outline. A rectangular piece of blotting paper with pen and ink numbers, (?automatic) writing and splotches of ink is pasted at an oblique angle to the right of the anatomical print. Pasted below it is a rectangular piece of marbled paper. Within a simple wooden frame, with bevelled edges angled inwards, glazed.
