Summary
A Scottish hardstone and gold bracelet circa 1850.
Full description
A Scottish hardstone and gold bracelet circa 1850 composed of six uniform plaques three of which containing a locket-backed compartment and all six mounted at the front with a polished hardstone cabochon including examples in agate, bloodstone and jasper in Gothic coronet-style gold frames with tubular arched gold connections. The locket-backed compartments containing photographs of Ellen Terry, Edith Craig and Edward Gordon Craig. In the original brown leather fitted case by Marshall & Sons Edinburgh. The construction of the reverse of the bracelet suggests that it was originally made with six locket backed compartments and three have therefore been deliberately removed. Donated to Smallhythe Place by Mrs Polling. Donated by Robinetta Rawlinson 24 September 2010. Report by John Benjamin Honorary Jewellery Advisor August 2021.
Provenance
Believed to have been owned by or given to Ellen Terry (1847-1928) or her daughter Edith Craig (1869-1947) and came to the National Trust in 1939 when Edith Craig transferred Smallhythe Place (including buildings, land and contents) to the Trust.
