Full description
Portrait miniature, watercolour on ivory, Kate Terry, Mrs Arthur Lewis (1844-1924) by Arthur James Lewis (1824/5 - London 1901). 1897. Oval. Head and shoulders portrait of a woman, turned to the right, almost right profile, wearing a blue dress trimmed with white lace, and a necklace with a crucifix. Blue eyes, grey hair, pink complexion. Unpainted ivory background. Signed and dated 1897. Report by John Benjamin Jewellery Advisor August 2021.
Provenance
Believed to have been owned by or given to Ellen Terry (1847-1928) or her daughter Edith Craig (1869-1947) and came to the National Trust in 1939 when Edith Craig transferred Smallhythe Place (including buildings, land and contents) to the Trust.
