Summary
Georgian topaz and gold ring circa 1800 the oval shaped foil back golden brown topaz collet-set in a carved foliate surround between carved shoulders on a fluted gold hoop.
Full description
Given by Ellen Terry to her friend and dressmaker Alice Comyns-Carr. She in turn gave it to Dorothy Barnard and then to Mrs Betty Pether who donated it back to Smallhythe on 6th September 1991. Report by John Benjamin Honorary Jewellery Advisor August 2021.
Provenance
Believed to have been owned by or given to Ellen Terry (1847-1928) or her daughter Edith Craig (1869-1947) and came to the National Trust in 1939 when Edith Craig transferred Smallhythe Place (including buildings, land and contents) to the Trust.
