A pair of large woven silk costume ornaments circa 1890. The cushion shaped buff-coloured plaques each mounted with large green paste, colourless paste and imitation pearl highlights.
Full description
A pair of large woven silk costume ornaments circa 1890 worn as shoulder epaulettes by William Lewin (1847 - 1897) whose stage name was William Terris in the title role of Henry V111 at The Lyceum in January 1892. Terris was subsequently murdered by Richard Archer Prince a deranged and disgruntled actor who was subsequently sent to Broadmoor and died in 1937. Terris's ghost is said to haunt Covent Garden Station. Report by John Benjamin Honorary Jewellery Advisor August 2021.
Provenance
Believed to have been owned by or given to Ellen Terry (1847-1928) or her daughter Edith Craig (1869-1947) and came to the National Trust in 1939 when Edith Craig transferred Smallhythe Place (including buildings, land and contents) to the Trust.
