Full description
A large silver and citrine brooch designed by Lawrence Alma Tadema (1836-1912) circa 1885-1888 of gothic design. The oval dark golden brown citrine mounted in a series of trefoil shaped claws extending outwards in a pattern of radiating bars suggesting buttresses extending to the deep engraved silver outer frame of medieval ecclesiastic inspiration.Worn by Ellen Terry for her role as Lady Macbeth in 1888. This brooch can be seen in the celebrated portrait of the actress by John Singer Sargent (1856-1925). Report by John Benjamin Honorary Jewellery Advisor August 2021.
Provenance
Believed to have been owned by or given to Ellen Terry (1847-1928) or her daughter Edith Craig (1869-1947) and came to the National Trust in 1939 when Edith Craig transferred Smallhythe Place (including buildings, land and contents) to the Trust.
