Summary
Charcoal over graphite under drawing on Oriental paper. Design study by Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones (Birmingham 1833 - London 1898) in 1894/5 for Dame Ellen Terry (1847-1928)'s costume as Guinevere in J. Comyns Carr's 'King Arthur' (1895) performed at the Lyceum Theatre, London. A three-quarter-length study in profile to left, flowers in her hair, holding up her skirt. Framed. Inscribed on the back by Ellen Terry 'Sketched by Edward Burne-Jones for the Lyceum play King Arthur and given to me by Henry Irving in 1895, Ellen Terry'. The play opened at the Lyceum Theatre on 12 January 1895. One of two drawings described as designs for King Arthur, bought by Clare Atwood.
