Summary
An ebony and ivory-veneered games box, Visakhapatnam, circa 1850, in the form of two hinged books. The exterior with a chess board panel in the centre surrounded by an engraved decorative double border of vine leaves and flowers, the sandalwood interior inlaid with a backgammon board and engraved lozenges and roundels containing a set of three ebony and ivory boxes with a conforming decoration, each of which contain chess and draughts/backgammon game pieces.
Provenance
Purchased from the estate of the late Lord Wraxall with the assistance of the NHMF and donations from members and supporters.
